What is a Pumonary Function Study?

A pulmonary function study is a totally noninvasive test usually taking from 30 to 60 minutes. The patient is asked to take deep breaths and perform breathing maneuvers while sitting in a small booth. Nose clips are applied to prevent air leaks from the nose and the patient is asked to breathe into a mouthpiece. Depending on the results, medication may be administered to determine response to bronchodilators designed to open the airways and make it easier to breathe. A pulse oximeter may be placed on the finger to measure oxygen levels noninvasively. Sometimes, a 6 minute walk test is performed to determine the presence and severity of shortness of breath.
